So the question really is, what exactly is Pilates and why should you try it? This was the exact same question on some of our minds as we made it to the Pilates retreat hosted by Bupelo Moalosi (a certified Pilates instructor) at Mokolodi’s world view. Not so long ago I was also in the dark as to what Pilates is and what its benefits were and I must say that my life is so much better since getting the skinny on this Pilates thing. I have realized that the older I get the more particular I become about my exercise routine, I want my workouts to have a holistic approach, I need them to be gentle and have the lowest possible chance of injury while keeping my body healthy and trim. After all I want to carry this beautiful body like a boss well into my 80s. That is not too much to ask right?
Bupelo says it really isn’t much to ask . According to dummies.com: Pilates develops much of what exercisers need — strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, coordination, balance, and good posture — with a much lower chance of injury than with other forms of exercise.” So basically you get to look great without having to endure high impact workouts that could leave your joints and muscles worse for wear. Awesome right.
Now that we got that out of the way, I must say that the Mokolodi Game reserve was an excellent choice of venue for Botswana’s very first Pilates retreat. Mokolodi isn’t far from the city which is super great for people who do not have cars or who do not like long drives, but it is also completely surrounded by nature and beautiful hills. Practicing in World View conference centers and playing outside on breaks felt like we were practicing at the very edge of the world.
The retreat included Pilates (of course), Yoga and short massages. I missed the first part of the one day retreat but had so much fun during the second half. I have to say I do not always enjoy Pilates, it kicks my butt all the time and makes me feel like I have the weakest core in the whole entire world but still I am after “the dancer’s body” you know the toned body that makes one look like there were just born that way. And believe you me , I do need some Pilates because “well have you seen my thighs lately, they be just like jelly,” but I am okay because I know people who know how to handle these type of situations.
My only complaint was that it was too short (those who came in the morning disagree) and I really hope that the next time it will be a full weekend retreat with full massages, way more yoga and some dance if possible. All in all I am pretty much impressed by how far the fitness industry in Botswana has come and I feel that we need this types of retreats, we need variety in our lives and we definitely need to try new things.
